Has the clutter bug bitten and you want to do a quick tidy-up? Or are you just looking to jump-start your organising journey at home? Here are 3 things to declutter today. None of them require a huge investment of time. Plus, you can tackle them any time of the year, and you don’t need to purchase any special home organisation items.

Ready to clear out some clutter, and make it easier to find what you need when you need it? Let’s go.

Declutter Towels

Number one on our list of 3 things to declutter today: towels. How many towels do you have in rotation right now, and how many more are stowed away in your closets and cabinets? How many towels does one person need anyway?

Unless you’re sick, you probably don’t need a fresh towel after every shower. The general rule of thumb is to wash bath towels after every three to four uses, or at least once a week.

If you’re like me and do laundry once a week, you’ll be fine with just two bath towels. Add another two to four smaller towels for face, hand, and hair washing and you’re pretty much all set.

If you do laundry more sporadically—perhaps you live in a dorm, or have to traipse to a laundromat to do your washing—you might want to keep more towels on hand so that you don’t run out in between laundry days.

Have a look through your towels and reduce your inventory by sorting out any that are torn, stained, or tattered. You might want to go for all one colour in your bath, and get rid of any mismatched towels. If the latter are still in good shape, try donating them to your local animal or homeless shelter—they always have a need for towels in good condition.

Sort Out Your Shoes

If you’re anything like me, you have shoes in your closet that you just never wear. Decluttering your footwear is a great way to free up some space in there, and it’s a relatively quick task. Here are three easy steps to sort out your shoes:

  1. Start by taking out all your shoes, sandals, slides, trainers and slippers, and sorting them into piles. Keep, donate or sell, and trash are the three main categories you’ll want to work with.
  2. Dispose of any footwear that’s worn out and beyond repair. If you have shoes you no longer wear but are in good condition, consider donating them to a local thrift store or the Red Cross.
  3. If you have any designer shoes that are in relatively new condition but hurt your feet, consider selling them online. Sometimes you’re able to recoup nearly what you paid for them.

Anything that’s left over in your keep pile goes back into your closet or onto your shoe rack. Take the opportunity to wipe down the shelf or cabinet you store them in, and then arrange them neatly. Not only does your shoe section look roomier and cleaner now, but it only holds footwear that’s comfortable and you like wearing. Win-win.

Pantry Staples & Spices to Declutter Today

Another great place to do a quick decluttering burst is right in your kitchen. Take a look through your pantry staples and spice rack. Get rid of anything that is expired, has leaked, or doesn’t taste good.

Sorting out your spice rack and staples not only frees up space in the kitchen, but it also makes it easier to find what you need when you’re cooking. Or to identify what replacement ingredients you’ll soon need to add to your shopping list.

It’s super annoying to discover you’re missing an ingredient when you’re in the middle of cooking a new recipe when all the stores are closed. Decluttering your kitchen staples at least twice a year is a good way to keep things fresh.

Once you’ve decluttered your shoes, towels, and pantry, you can move on to other areas of your home, confident that you’re one step closer to an organised home.
